Drug Testing Quick Guide: Why Contractor Drug Testing Matters
Certified Contractors
August 19, 2026

Contractors are part of business. Whether performing one-time routine maintenance, operating equipment to complete a long-term project, accessing critical infrastructure, or working in a healthcare setting with patients, impairment creates active liability and safety risks for other contractors, employees, and clients on-site. Whether a contractor is present for a day or several years, having access to environments where physical safety is critical sometimes entails additional qualification requirements and guardrails to keep others safe, such as drug screening.
Understanding how different certifications protect sites
To understand why drug testing can be such a critical tool for protecting physical safety and productivity, it’s important to recognize the specific roles different types of contractor certifications play.
Criminal background checks and drug testing address different types of risk at different stages, and they are complementary. Criminal background checks help identify relevant criminal history concerns that may affect site access, while drug testing helps support substance use policies and address impairment-related risks that can impact physical safety, productivity, and day-to-day operations. When paired together, risk gaps narrow, creating a tangible difference. In fact, two Certified Contractors clients who require drug testing saw an 86% reduction in on-site incidents.

A shared advantage to growing trust: How drug testing benefits sites and general contractors alike
Protecting assets from substance-fueled risks is a win for both sides. For sites, drug testing can help establish consistent baseline safety expectations for contractors before granting site access. For contracting companies, drug screening can help protect reputation, establish an internal standard for professionalism among contractors, and set expectations for remaining drug-free on client sites.
Before a project starts, sites want reassurance that contractors:
- Meet established safety and potential legal requirements
- Are prepared to enter controlled environments
- Have completed their required verification processes
- Align with site-specific expectations
Drug testing doesn’t just support site needs. Consistent certification policies can help contractors by reducing uncertainty when doing business, providing documentation and policies that help keep things running smoothly, and demonstrating readiness for current and future projects.
A contractor certification policy built to help reduce safety risks, equipment-related accidents, security concerns, and operational disruptions supports the kind of site where everyone can operate with greater confidence and peace of mind.
Proactively supporting risk management and documentation
No one ever asks “what happened” when everything goes smoothly. Questions like this always come after a mishap. When a contractor-related incident occurs, sites and auditors often review whether proper certification and protocol were in place before site access was granted.
Not only does drug testing help set the tone for contractor site safety expectations, but it also adds an extra layer of documentation if a mishap occurs on site. Adding drug testing to current contractor certification requirements can help sites and vendors align with internal policies and provide a documentation guardrail for audits regarding insurance or potential legal compliance inquiries.
More importantly, drug testing can help proactively support risk management by identifying potential risks before an incident occurs, rather than relying on documentation after. From February 2026 to July 2026, 25% of contractors who were not certified for sites using Certified Contractors were disqualified due to drug test results.

Creating consistency
A common challenge that sites face is maintaining consistent contractor qualification standards when dealing with multiple vendors. Different drug testing vendors may use different documentation and collection processes, and not all 10-panel drug tests are the same. To further complicate this, different background screening providers may use different search methods, packages, and internal policies, resulting in inconsistent standards for contractor certification.
A unified contractor certification program that includes drug testing can help establish:
- Standardized qualification criteria
- A consistent documentation process for requirements
- Clearly defined approval workflows
- A simpler recertification process
- Better communication with vendors
For vendors, a unified certification system helps reduce duplicate requests and re-use certain certifications for future projects. This provides greater visibility into who is authorized for site access and the standard used to certify them, while reducing administrative complexity.
How contractor drug testing works
Certified Contractors offers a 10-panel drug test that can be ordered on its own or added to any of our three screening levels. Our drug tests are reviewed for tampering, contamination, and inconsistencies, and are easy to order, making it easy to support a drug-free site.
Here is how the process works

- Placing order: The contracting company initiates requests from sites for contractor drug testing certifications.
- Contractors are provided with instructions: The contractor receives instructions to complete the testing process, including the location and a timeframe for arrival at the site for collection.
- Collection process: A specialist at the collection site collects the sample for analysis. Chain-of-custody procedures are used to document handling and help ensure accurate, reliable results.
- Analysis: The sample is analyzed by a certified laboratory technician. Results that come back positive are evaluated by a certified Medical Review Officer to confirm accuracy. Following this review, the results are transmitted to the background check provider for inclusion in an applicant’s report.
- Results available: Results are returned and displayed in the individual contractor’s profile. Negative results that align with site requirements will show on the individual’s dashboard as “Certified.” Results that do not fulfill site requirements are marked as “Not Certified.”

A simpler way to certify contractors to support a drug-free site
Interested in adding drug testing as a site requirement and considering a unified system for future projects, but not sure where to start? Below are a few considerations.
A few questions to consider when evaluating a certification program for contractors
- Does the process support applicable industry requirements?
- Can requirements be standardized easily across vendors?
- Is drug testing consistent, comprehensive, flexible, repeatable, and sustainable?
If the answer to any of the above is no, we have a solution.
Certifying contractors in three easy steps
Certified Contractors makes it easy to certify that contractors are site-ready in three simple, comprehensive, quick, and sustainable steps.
- Choose a screening certification level based on your requirements: ranging from basic criminal history paired with a current name and location search to multiple names and locations, continuous criminal monitoring, annual screening, badges, and medical exclusions list searches.
- Add a 10-panel drug test to any screening level: Add drug testing to any screening level or order it à la carte.
- Add on searches as needed to fit niche requirements: e.g., adult and child abuse registries, E-Verify, professional licenses and certifications)
We bridge the gap between time constraints and consistent site safety standards. For sites, our program offers peace of mind by confirming that contractors don't have a history of risky, dangerous, or disqualifying behavior. For contracting companies, our goal is to provide a way to build confidence and quickly qualify contractors against site-specific requirements.
